I wanted to share with you one method today that I have learned that has helped me to conserve and save. Every time I cook something, I take each item I'm using into consideration to be used for something else. For instance, I need an onion for chopping into a meal to cook. I used up what I needed, and all that's left is the skins or parts that aren't edible. Instead of just throwing the onion scraps out, I think of anything else I can do with the onion scraps. Believe it or, not there are! *One thing I can do is compost it. (To learn about composting, check out my gardening section) easy! Just keep a container under your sink or wherever that's vented to let air into it so it doesn't get moldy, and put your veggie scraps in there for your garden compost.) *Another option is to take the scraps, rinse them ( this is easier if you wash the onion before hand ) and add them to a zip-lock freezer bag. Stuff it in your freezer and your done! This freezer bag, once full of veggie scraps, can be made later into veggie stock! *if you have critters that are vegetarian, you can save the scraps for them too! I have chickens, so if there was for instance squash goop I didn't need or carrot tops, I'd save them for the chickens and in turn, it saved me money on buying chicken feed so often! So there you have it, three easy ways that are free to re-purpose a single item without throwing it out:) not only do you save a little money doing this, but you start to feel a satisfaction with re-purposing something and not wasting it. Now granted, there are some days I'm just in a hurry and can't think straight and just throw the scraps out but hey, we are human and it's not a big deal! It's a habit I've made for myself to think twice before throwing something out and I enjoy the feeling of re using something to make something else, so do what feels comfortable for you! Happy frugal-ling!
